Southern California Alcohol & Drug Programs provides treatment services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons through Awakenings - a fully accessible residential recovery program. Opened in November, 1988, Awakenings was the first residential drug abuse treatment program for and by Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons in the United States. Awakenings provides a six to 12-month long treatment program delivered entirely in American Sign Language for Deaf men and women.  Located in Whittier, the program facility consists of four separate apartments with a total of 14 residential beds for men, and women. Awakenings added an additional ten transitional and permanent housing beds via a HUD grant.

Awakenings program activities include:

  Comprehensive needs assessment

  Treatment planning and monitoring

  Individual and group counseling

  12 Step peer support groups

  Recreational and social activities

  Case management

Linkage and transportation to social services

Discharge planning and referral to permanent housing

To coordinate our services within the Deaf Community, Awakenings works closely with the Greater Los Angeles Council on Deafness and other agencies assisting the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons. Throughout the year, Awakenings staff provide education and awareness presentations on the substance abuse recovery needs of Deaf persons, and we are a regular participant in Deaf Expo which reaches 10,000 Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons during the annual weekend event in Southern California.
